The best way to use and search the database is fully explained in this video tutorial presented by Dr. Hawrelak. It can be found on the main menu under ”Tour the Probiotic Advisor”.
The strain I am looking for is not coming up. How come?
There are two possibilities:
1) The search terms are not spelt correctly or fully.
Take the example of Lactobacillus reuteri ncimb 30242.
One can use the full name Lactobacillus reuteri ncimb 30242.
Alternatively, If you just type up Lactobacillus reuteri, a list of several Lactobacillus reuteri strain options will come up, including the strain you are looking for, in this example Lactobacillus reuteri ncimb 30242. Just select the strain and proceed.
If you type up the species “reuteri” alone it will come up as well. Finally, you can also try with the strain code or number, such as in our example, 30242.
2) The strain you are looking for is not commercially available in Australia, Canada or the United States. Some strains used in research studies are not yet commercially-available; others may be available in Italy or Japan or other countries, but they are not available in the 3 countries included in our database. These strains are, therefore, not included in the database, as they are not currently clinically-relevant for clinicians in these 3 countries.
I have found a new strain or product which I think should be included in the database. Can I send the details?
Yes, you can! Please ensure it is a strain (not a strain-less species) or provide a hyperlink to the product (again, ensure the strains, not just the species are listed). We will endeavour to add it to the database once we’ve reviewed the product.
LOG IN ISSUES
I am having issues logging in. What can I do?
The first thing is to make sure you are logging into the correct area.
Our courses are held on a separate platform called “Teachable”. To log into the course area, please go to “online courses” on the main menu which will take you to the teachable platform, directly into the courses area. If you need to reset your password, go to teachable.com, and follow the prompts in the log-in space on the top right hand corner of the screen. Note: we cannot access or see your Teachable password and cannot find it for you or reset it for you. You can, however, reset it yourself.
To search the database, go to “Log in” on our main menu and follow the prompts.
If you need to change your password, follow the prompts found on the log-in page.
Many customers have different log-in details for each of these platforms. A password manager compatible with your browser may help you safely store and retrieve your log-in details, along with the countless other ones needed for other websites these days.
My password does not work to open the pdf course notes. How do I open them?
All course notes require a protective password (it helps us reduce copyright infringements).
It is different from your own log-in password, and it is different for each course.
It is located below the pdf viewfinder, you may need to scroll down an inch or so to see it though.
How long do I have access to my course(s)?
Courses are accessible for 12 months from the date of purchase.
How does the subscription work?
When you purchase an annual subscription, we will bill you on a recurring basis. It is up to you to cancel these membership payments via “My Account” which you can access after logging in – but we are always here to help if you have any problems. I would like to change my credit card. How can I do this?
To change your credit card details, log in, then go to “My Account” on the main menu, then “My Subscription” on the submenu, followed by “Change Payment”.
I would like to cancel my subscription. How can I do this?
To cancel your subscription, log into your account, then go to“My Account” on the main menu, then “My Subscription” on the submenu, followed by “Cancel”.
My credit card has been charged. Are refunds possible?
If you are a new customer, please read Section 4 of our terms and conditions with regards to conditions of purchase and refunds. We do not offer refunds for change of mind. Please try the Probiotic Advisor with our one-day free trial before your purchase.
If you are an existing customer and your card has been charged despite cancelling your subscription or you forgot to cancel, please contact us within a week of payment to resolve the situation. We can action a refund in such circumstances.
Can the Probiotic Advisor try, be sent samples, test or conduct clinical trials of commercial probiotic products?
The short answer is NO to all of the above.
The Probiotic Advisor’s aim is to provide independent and unbiased information to its subscribers. It assesses and relays the evidence for probiotic strains trialled in human studies and published in the peer-reviewed literature. In order to remain objective, the Probiotic Advisor and Dr. Hawrelak do not associate with any commercial entities; nor do they receive funding from commercial entities.
Can the Probiotic Advisor sell my brand of probiotics?
The Probiotic Advisor does not sell probiotic products, it provides a summary of evidence for commercially-available strains and information on which products to find these strains in.

Dr. Hawrelak is not able to discuss private medical matters via email. Dr. Hawrelak and his associates are able to provide telehealth appointments via his clinic. The clinic can be contacted by phone 03 6234 4223. From abroad, dial +61 followed by the number, omitting the first zero.
